Our story

2015

Data Science Discovery is Founded

The Data Science Discovery Program launched at Berkeley Institute for Data Science. It started with 5 projects and 20 students. In 2023, Discovery runs 250 projects with more than 900 student participants.

Launched Data Science Consulting Program

The program launched the Data Science Consulting Program to provide consulting services for data-related projects by leveraging the world class talent at UC Berkeley.

Data Science Discovery Receives Schmidt Futures Grant

 Schmidt Futures provided a grant to the Data Science Discovery Program to expand its impact. The program also established a partnership with Microsoft to provide funding and build project partnerships.

Held Our First Data Science Discovery Showcase

The Discovery Program held its first major Discovery Showcase highlighting student projects. The program developed a partnership with SkyDeck to connect Berkeley students with the startup community. It also expanded its reach to include more non-profits, including the United Nations.

Launched Discovery Graduate Fellowships

The Data Science Discovery Program launched a new initiative, the Discovery Graduate Fellowships, which provides consulting services to various projects.

Published A Report In Cambridge Guidebook for Undergraduate Research

The program published a report on the Data Science Discovery Program in the Cambridge Guidebook for Undergraduate Research. The program also began offering Savio, which provides high-performance computing credits for researchers.

Opened Up a New Collaborative Space For Students

Opened up a newly updated collaborative space for students to work on their discovery projects. The program has scaled and become the largest size it has ever been, with X projects.

Success Stories

A Discovery project used satellite imagery to bring real-time pest information to farmers in Africa, restructured data infrastructures to facilitate water quality monitoring systems for state regulators in California, and used computer vision to help UCSF doctors identify irregularities in x-ray images. And that’s just the beginning.
