Join us on Thursday, December 5 for the Fall Data Science Showcase!

November 25, 2019

Don’t miss the showcase at Sutardja Dai Hall highlighting the amazing ways that students are using data science to advance discovery and impact across campus and beyond!

  • Learn about hands-on student Discovery research projects leveraging data science for everything from mapping maize crops to prevent pests to tracking donations for better deployment in disasters.

  • Get the latest on Modules, an innovative approach to integrating data science in research and teaching across campus, from neurobiology to linguistics to macroeconomics.

  • Find out how to use the Human Contexts and Ethics (HCE) toolkit to explore what’s at stake for society and ethics in every step of the data science life cycle.

The Showcase kicks off with a series of presentations in Banatao Auditorium, followed by posters, demonstrations, and light refreshments in the adjoining Kvamme Atrium.

Whether you’re a student interested in getting involved in Discovery, Modules, or HCE next semester, or a future program partner, the showcase will serve as a great opportunity to learn more and get connected.

Among the 30+ showcase projects:

  • Work at Home Vintage Experts (WAHVE) - WAHVE pairs companies looking for specific skills with “vintage” professionals who have these skills. Businesses get the quality and knowledge they need, while the professionals (people over 50) get to phase into retirement working from their home offices. Students are helping to analyze data from 52,692 unique applicants.
  • Understanding Flight Performance Data (NASA Ames) - This project investigates flight behavior of airline pilots and the factors affecting that behavior in a series of challenging simulated flights. The project is examining a large data set including written records, a simulator log files, and associated eye tracking data to gain insight into pilots’ behavior.
  • Exploring the Achievement Gap in Berkeley Public Schools - This project is using publicly-available state testing data to develop analyses that are easily understandable for different stakeholders to support informed school district policy decisions addressing performance gaps among students in Berkeley schools.
