We recently discovered a resident neuroprotective retinal astrocytes-ganglion cell lipoxin circuit, which is impaired during retinal stress, including ocular hypertension. Lipoxins directly act on retinal ganglion cells and microglia. Treatment with lipoxins is neuroprotective in mouse models of glaucoma. Endogenous retinal lipoxin formation is a homeostatic function of astrocytes. Homeostatic roles, cellular targets and signaling pathways of lipoxins in the retina are an important gap of knowledge. We will use single-cell and bulk RNAseq omics to discover pathways and targets for the novel neuroprotective actions of lipoxins.
