Major/Minor: Data Science & Media Studies 2021

DSUS Role: Program Coordinator, Discovery Operations

Claire Huang, a senior studying data science and media studies, wanted to help students like herself participate in exciting research. She is a program coordinator for the Discovery Operations Team, which supports the Data Science Discovery Program (one of the largest research programs on campus!) through workshop development, check-ins with student researchers, and more.

Question: How did you become interested in data science?

Answer: I became interested in exploring the intersection of media and data science after taking a R1B class called "Is Technology Evil?" in the summer of 2018. In that class, we put the combination of technology and media under a critical lens and reflected on social media's impact on the society. I was motivated to learn about how to manage and apply data science to drive changes in the media landscape.

Q: What led you to join DSUS?

A: I find DSUS' Discovery Program a cornerstone initiative that serves the fast-growing data science community at Berkeley, and I want to help students like me to build networks and participate in exciting research opportunities.
