The Data Science Commons is a dynamic new structure in the college that empowers groups of faculty across campus to develop pathbreaking academic and research programs across disciplinary boundaries. It is an experimental space, designed to advance outstanding new transdisciplinary programs that may not fit into the footprint of existing departments.

The Data Science Commons provides start-up support, services, convening space, and other resources as needed for emergent groups of faculty to develop teaching and research programs that can add to Berkeley’s disciplinary strengths, expand teaching offerings, or accelerate disciplinary change.

Berkeley’s faculty, researchers, and students will benefit from the ripples spreading from the Commons back to established departments and schools: new curricula filling unmet needs and cutting across fields of study; new transdisciplinary research groups, centers, and institutes; and new career paths for next-generation researchers.
