The pilot offering of Berkeley’s new intermediate-level data science course, “Principles and Techniques of Data Science,” is now open for students to sign up. Students interested in taking Data Science 100 (cross-listed between Computer Science and Statistics) can register now on Cal Central for CS C100 or Stat C100 (ThTh 12:30-2:00 lecture and a 2-hour lab section). More information, as well as a form to sign up for updates, is available on the course website.

In spring 2017, UC Berkeley data science students will have an opportunity to take a new project-based, interdisciplinary course focused on the role that hydrology plays in malaria transmission.  Using data from sub-Saharan Africa, students will collaborate with each other and partners at a nonprofit organization to improve the hydrologic component of a model being used in efforts to eradicate malaria.Monsoon flooding image

This fall the Data Science Initiative and the D-Lab partnered with student organizers to initiate the Data Scholars program, a community providing a welcoming environment and support resources to underrepresented students taking Foundations of Data Science (Data 8), Berkeley’s lower-division course for students of all intended majors.

This fall, more than 500 students are taking Foundations of Data Science, Berkeley's lower-division data science course for students of all majors. A survey was completed in September by nearly all of the enrolled students in the Fall course (504 out of 517), taught this fall by Professor Ani Adhikari of Statistics. Below is a snapshot of the students enrolled in the course this fall.

A team of Berkeley faculty have been awarded a $150,000 Google grant and $30,000 of in-kind credits to further develop the computing environment used in Foundations of Data Science, Berkeley’s pioneering course for lower-division students of all majors.

This spring, Berkeley’s growing Data Science curriculum will take another step forward, with the introduction of a new lower-division course that allows students of all majors to learn relatively advanced statistical methods without the need for extensive prerequisites.

Students interested in data science at Berkeley are invited to join us for the Fall's first Data Science Social hosted by data science student groups like the Data Society Society, Undergraduate Statistics Association, ML@B, Diversatech, Haas Data Science Club, and more.

Time: Thursday at 6 PM - 8 PM

Location: BIDS 190 Doe Library

Undergraduate students interested in data science have a unique opportunity to apply the skills learned in class to hands-on research projects led by UC Berkeley faculty.

The Undergraduate Research Apprentice Program (URAP) is the perfect way to get involved in Berkeley’s world-renowned research and develop more advanced skills. URAP is one of the signature programs of a Berkeley education. Students can also earn 1 unit of academic credit for every three hours of research work (limit of 4 units per term).

Students enrolled in Foundations of Data Science (CS / Info / Statistics C8) or connector courses at Berkeley can now borrow laptop computers from the Library for the entire semester. The loan program, which began at the start of the Fall 2016 semester, is designed to support students who do not have adequate portable computing of their own. It is sponsored by the Data Science Planning Initiative with generous support from Intel and individual donors.

To help students navigate an increasingly data-filled world, this fall Berkeley is ramping up its burgeoning Data Science education program, with over a thousand undergraduates from a wide range of intended majors slated to take part in the interdisciplinary curriculum this year.

The program offers a foundation for all students to engage capably and critically with data, and creates pathways to advanced-level work.

UC Berkeley’s burgeoning data science curriculum was one of the topics discussed at this year’s Microsoft Faculty Summit, held July 13-15 in Redmond, Washington. The event included more than 500 top academic and research scientists, with prominent speakers such as Microsoft founder Bill Gates and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.
