We are working with Sergio Castellanos, a research professional at both the
California Institute for Energy & Environment (CIEE) and the Renewables &
Appropriate Energy Laboratory (RAEL) here at UC Berkeley. Under his guidance, we set
out to answer the question: “In a given city, how much additional energy could be
produced if every residential window was converted into a window that doubles as a
transparent solar panel?” An accurate answer to that question could spur adoption of
window-based Building-Integrated Solar Photovoltaics (BIPV) and help decarbonize our
electrical grid, an essential component of the battle against climate change.
