Jon Bashor joined the Division of Computing, Data Science, and Society after retiring as communications manager for the Computing Sciences organization at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory for 21 years. Jon began his writing career covering stock car races in Bakersfield, then moved north to earn a master’s degree in journalism at UC Berkeley. After graduation, he worked as a reporter for several daily newspapers in the San Francisco Bay Area.
In 1991, he joined the Public Affairs Office at Lawrence Livermore National Lab, then moved to Berkeley Lab in 1997 to provide communications support for Computing Sciences, which includes the NERSC supercomputing center and ESnet, the Department of Energy’s superfast network, as well research in applied math, computer science, and computational science. Since he made up his job as he went along, Jon also created outreach programs with high schools in Richmond and Oakland. In November 2017, he received the Berkeley Lab Director’s Award for Exceptional Service Achievement.
His wife and son are also Cal alumni.
