Charis Thompson, Chancellor’s Professor at UC Berkeley, is helping to integrate the social sciences, humanities, and arts in the Division of Computing, Data Science, and Society as the Associate Dean for Campus Partnerships. She is passionate about this mission and believes it befits UC Berkeley’s public nature, social justice orientation, and unique distribution of excellence across campus. Charis recently completed a year as Visiting Professor at the Princeton Institute for Advanced Study School of Social Science, co-convening the year’s theme seminar on Science and the State with Alondra Nelson, and was previously Professor of Sociology at the London School of Economics. She is the author of the books “Making Parents (2005) and “Good Science” (2013), has written articles and opinion pieces at the intersection of science and society, and has served on several policy committees, including the World Economic Forum Global Future Council on Technology, Values, and Policy and the Nuffield Working Group on Human Genome Modification. She is a recipient of UC Berkeley’s Social Science Distinguished Teaching Award. In 2017, she received an Honorary Doctorate for Services to Science and Society from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology.
