Mapping and Analytics

Team lead names (students): Sue Mani

Staff Advisors: Eric Van Dusen, Anthony Suen

Number of students in leadership roles: 1

Number of students overall: 6

The Mapping and Analytics team supports the DSEP with analysis of different facets of the student experience. In alignment with Divisional leadership, it aims to provide information that can be used in decision making or program building or integrated into communications.

The team’s regular work includes analytics on student participation in classes, mapping out of courses, requirements, and pathways in application domains, and tracking what peer institutions are doing. It takes on other analytics tasks as needed.

  • Data 8 student survey analysis, hopefully also consistent framing of questions.

  • Checking which programs take (or don’t yet take) Data 8 as prereq.

  • Identifying categories of courses and prereq chains for design of minor and major.

  • Campus-wide student survey of Fall 2017.

Fall 2017 Discovery Project Showcase

Advance student learning and research experience by connecting and supporting undergraduates with cutting edge data science research projects in all domain areas. Develop the support systems and practices that will allow the program to scale.

SWITCH MEXICO PROJECT - UN Data Grand Prize, Fall 2017

Data Science Discovery Projects provide undergraduates opportunities to engage in hands-on, team-based discovery opportunities leveraging data science by connecting them with cutting-edge graduate student/postdoc research projects, community impact groups, entrepreneurship ventures, and educational initiatives across UC Berkeley. Data science is a good choice for Discovery projects because it is an intrinsically interdisciplinary field with broad reach, fast scaling capacity, and a large pool of interested students and projects. Students can earn units through Undergraduate Research Apprenticeship Program (URAP). Since 2015, the Data Science Discovery Program has helped hundreds of students the opportunity to join real world data science projects with Berkeley research groups, non-profit partners, and startups.
