A Message to Our Students

Our prime concern is for your health and fundamental well-being—as well as your academic learning.  And we want to assure you that throughout this tumultuous time, we commit to helping you in any way that we can. Please take special care of your whole selves – get plenty of rest, follow the general guidelines for illness prevention, and check in with yourself to monitor your emotional health response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Staff, faculty, classmates, families are all out there for you.

Advising

Data Science Advising Appointments

As usual, students may schedule online Google Hangouts appointments via CalCentral up to one week in advance. We are not currently offering in-person appointments.

Data Science Drop-in Advising

Data Science Drop-in Advising is taking place online on Google Hangouts. Visit our Data Science Advising webpage to check the drop-in schedule, and access the sign-in list during drop-in hours.

Data Science Peer Advising

Data Science Peer Advisors are still available to respond to questions through the Data 001 Piazza page and email (ds-peer-advising@berkeley.edu). Feel free to reach out for any data science related questions through these online options!

Data Science Peer Consulting

Looking for a little help with data science? Not sure how to use a Jupyter notebook? Need to learn a little SQL for a research project? Students in our data consulting network are available via virtual drop-in shifts. Join the drop-in office hour(s) from 11am-4pm Mon-Fri via Google Hangouts at http://bit.ly/peer-consulting-drop-in. You can also send us an email at ds-peer-consulting@berkeley.edu to set up a virtual appointment. 

Student Teams

Team leads and supervisors are working with team members on accommodations including alternate meeting times, project extensions, and work arrangements. Please work with your teams, leads, and supervisors to figure out how and if your timeline and to-dos should change.

Hearst Field Annex B is closed for student team meetings through at least 4/7. All teams should already have set up a remote meeting option and a detailed shared notes document to accommodate members who need to miss meetings. For help setting up remote meetings, please contact your supervisor.

 DSEP summer recruiting is currently paused. Stay tuned for updates.

Student Emergency Funds: Students who need additional financial support can either create a case with Cal Student Central or submit a request for additional financial aid via the Cost of Attendance Adjustment Request. The Financial Aid and Scholarships Office has more specific information on their website

Commencement will be postponed, Chancellor Carol Christ announced in a message to graduating seniors

The default grading basis for all undergraduate courses for the spring 2020 semester will be changed to Passed/Not Passed (P/NP).
