The College of Letters & Science, College of Natural Resources, and College of Chemistry have approved the new data science minor, a program designed to serve students from a range of majors. Approval processes across the campus continue, with the hope of making the minor available to as many Berkeley students as possible this academic year.

DS OtsMaster’s of Information and Data Science (MIDS) student Daniel Santamaria Ots has received the Jack Larson Data for Good Fellowship for his research in Puerto Rico aimed at empowering disadvantaged communities and fostering further government transparency and accountability. Ots shifted his approach to research and data mining after witnessing the poor emergency response to hurricanes Irma and María.

The second annual National Workshop on Data Science Education drew more than 60 educators from a variety of institutions across the US, as well as Argentina, Brazil, Australia, the United Kingdom, and China. The workshop, developed around Berkeley's innovative undergraduate “Foundations of Data Science” curriculum and accompanying offerings, was held at Chou Hall from June 24-27.

Data science is an intellectual force multiplier. It can unlock insights on social problems, art collections, and language. It’s the glue that brings disciplines together. 

These are among the threads that drew three dozen Berkeley faculty and lecturers from across campus earlier this month for a three-day “boot camp” on incorporating data science into their teaching. They came from African studies, economics, law, and libraries; from statistics, history, and public health.

Heart, grit, and bold spirit burst through the grey clouds as families, friends, faculty, Chancellor Carol Christ and more than 100 graduates came together in Wheeler Hall Auditorium to celebrate UC Berkeley’s first ever data science commencement.

Welcoming the crowd, Data Science Education Program Faculty Lead Professor Cathryn Carson noted: “As a historian, it is a thrill to see all our paths converging on this special day. Because in coming together today, we are weaving a new story which we all are authoring, whose outcome we have the power and responsibility to define.”

UC Berkeley will celebrate its first class of data science majors in a commencement ceremony on May 19. One hundred students will graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in Data Science in the College of Letters and Science, a degree that became available last fall.

“Many of our graduates have helped to envision and build this remarkable program from the ground up,” said David Culler, Interim Dean of Data Sciences. “So we are thrilled to be celebrating with them and excited to see what path-breaking endeavors they will take on next.”
