The growing power and applicability of data science has helped to make the field a juggernaut in both industry and academia. To help prepare students of many different interests for a data-rich world, Prof. David E. Culler, former Chair of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at the University of California, Berkeley, has been working with his colleagues there to build a new and broad data science education curriculum.

The University of California, Berkeley, invites nominations and applications for the full-time position of Interim Dean of the newly created Division of Data Science. The term of office commences upon appointment, which may be as early as February 15, 2017. The end date may depend on the appointment of a permanent Dean, but will occur no later than June 30, 2018. This is an internal search restricted to those who have attained the rank of Professor at UC Berkeley.
UC Berkeley’s Data Science education program reached new heights in 2016 and is poised for further growth in 2017. Approximately 500 students enrolled in the entry-level course, Foundations of Data Science, and hundreds more in connector courses spanning topics ranging from neuroscience to media studies. Below are highlights from a semester that helped establish a model for refining and extending the curriculum to a broader spectrum of students and adding advanced classes in coming semesters.

As 2016 draws to a close, a report on the first year of Berkeley's Data Science Education Program has been released as part of the campus' ongoing efforts to integrate data science into the undergraduate curriculum and extend the program to larger populations of students in the future.
