Data Science's First Commencement!

We are very excited to share with you the following Data Science Inaugural Commencement details:


The Spring 2019 Data Science Commencement Ceremony 
will be held on Sunday, May 19th, 2019
in Wheeler Auditorium
from 2pm-4pm
**Reception immediately following in lobby of Wheeler Hall**

Participant Registration

If you would like to participate in the very first Data Science Commencement ceremony in Wheeler Hall on Sunday May 19th, and your Expected Graduation Term (EGT) is Fall 2018Spring 2019Summer 2019, or Fall 2019, please fill out the online registration form by April 15th.

Students who wish to have their names printed in the Data Science Commencement Program must complete this registration form by the April 15th deadline. Students who sign up after the deadline may still participate in commencement activities but will not have their names printed in the program.

Registration is now closed. Students who still need to register for participation in commencement must email the commencement coordinator, Marjorie Ensor, ensor@berkeley.edu(link sends e-mail).

Tickets

Each graduate may request up to six complimentary guest tickets (graduates will not need a ticket). There is a small possibility that additional tickets will be available after the first round of ticket pickups (instructions will be sent once you register for commencement). Please note that babies in arms will not need a ticket.

Everyone, with the exception of graduates, must have a ticket to enter Wheeler auditorium. Doors will open to guests one hour prior to the start of the ceremony. There is no reserved seating; seats are available on a first come, first served basis.

What Not to Bring

The following items are prohibited inside Wheeler Auditorium:

  • Large Bags or Backpacks
  • Glass Bottles/Aluminum cans
  • Food and Beverages (with the exception of bottled water)
  • Coolers/Ice Chests
  • Baby Strollers (designated stroller parking is located in lobby)
  • Skateboards/Bicycles/Scooters/Segways
  • Musical Instruments
  • Fireworks
  • Noise-Makers/Airhorns
  • Rolls of Toilet Paper/Confetti
  • Balloons (May be tied-off in lobby at your own discretion)
  • Signs/Banners/Flags
  • Tripods for Cameras
  • Animals (with the exception of documented service animals)
  • Lawn Furniture or Chairs
  • Any items that can be perceived as weapons

All bags are subject to search.

Parking

During commencement, visitors may park in designated daytime campus parking lots on a first-come, first-served basis for $10 a space. All designated disabled spaces and non-reserved spaces will be available for $10 to drivers with certified DP placards or license plates on a first-come, first-served basis. 

PARKING IS CREDIT CARD ONLY THIS YEAR – NO CASH WILL BE ACCEPTED. Visa, MC, Discover, and AmEx are all okay. Drivers must purchase a permit from the attendant to be displayed on the dashboard.

For more information about parking, see the Parking and Transportation website for commencement visitor parking(link is external) locations for Evening & Weekend Commencement Parking Lots. Due to the extreme limitations of on-campus and surrounding area parking, we advise guests to use public transportation. Please note that campus will not be operating the LOOP during commencement week. Additionally, no Campus perimeter shuttle will be available for Sunday, May 19th.

Will there be a photographer?

GradImages(link is external) will be photographing the ceremony and reception. In the week following the ceremony, proof order forms will be emailed to all graduates for viewing. You may place orders by visiting the GradImages(link is external) website.

Will the ceremony be recorded?

Yes! The ceremony will be live streamed, and the video will be available on the UCB public YouTube channel.

What about Honor cords?

Since there is no formalized Data Science Honors Program at this time, no cords will be available for purchase for Data Science Majors.

How much do tickets cost?

Nothing, they're free!

Where do I get tickets?

Graduates must pick up their tickets from the Data Science Advising team after they have registered to participate in the ceremony. More details will be announced later.

What about ADA Accomodations?

If you require an accommodation for effective communication (ASL interpreting/CART captioning, alternative media formats, etc.) or information about campus mobility access features in order to fully participate in this event, please tell your graduate, who will need to report the accomodations requests in the participant registration form.

**NOTE: Wheeler Auditorium is ADA compliant and we will have designated seating for handicapped guests.**
