A week of events democratizing data science and technology at Berkeley and beyond

Throughout campus, initiatives are underway to bring a variety of experiences, perspectives, knowledge, and talent to data science, computer science, statistics, and related technical fields. At the inaugural Data & Tech for All Week, from March 4-8 2019, we invite you to join us in celebrating this work across campus.

TUESDAY, March 5

D-Lab Open House and Panel Discussion on Hate Speech and Sexism

D-Lab, which provides support and resources for data-intensive social science research, welcomes all members of the campus community for a light lunch and short presentation on D-Lab instructional support services and how these embody our community philosophy of IOKN2K: it's ok not to know. The lunch will be followed by a panel discussion from 1 - 2 pm on hate speech and sexism led by D-Lab Executive Director Claudia von Vacano.

Time: Noon - 2 PM
Location: D-Lab, 356 Barrows Hall
Sponsor: D-Lab

Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon(link is external)

Art+Feminism teams up with Race+Justice! All day communal updating of Wikipedia entries. Wikimedia’s race and gender trouble is well-documented. While the reasons for the gap are up for debate, the practical effect of this disparity is not: content is skewed by the lack of participation by women and underrepresented groups. This adds up to an alarming absence in an important repository of shared knowledge. Let's change that. Tutorials for the beginner Wikipedian, reference materials, and refreshments provided. Brief trainings take place every hour on the hour. Refreshments will be provided. RSVP(link is external) appreciated.

Time: Noon - 5 PM
Location: Moffitt 405
Sponsors: UC Berkeley Library, American Cultures Center, D-Lab, DH at Berkeley, Berkeley Center for New Media

Data-intensive Research for Undergraduates(link is external)

This event will focus on how underrepresented undergraduates can get involved in data science research at UC Berkeley, and how they can incorporate data science into their fields of research. It is part of a series of events(link is external) to foster diverse and inclusive data science at Berkeley. Events include keynote talks, panel discussions, roundtable q&a sessions, and networking opportunities to encourage undergraduate students of diverse and underrepresented backgrounds to explore a potential future in data science and data-intensive research.

Time: 3:30 - 8 PM
Location: Berkeley Institute for Data Science, 190 Doe Library
Sponsor: BIDS

WEDNESDAY, March 6
