If you're interested in learning data science, a great place to start is with Foundations of Data Science, Berkeley's introductory data science course for students from all majors. Whether or not you're a student at Berkeley, you can access the resources created for this innovative course.
For the first time, Foundations of Data Science (CS/INFO/STAT C8) will be available during the summer session. Foundations of Data Science, or Data 8, is Berkeley's innovative introduction to core concepts of programming and statistics. Get hands-on experience working with data while exploring real-world issues ranging from racial profiling to social networks to California water usage.
What is the prerequisite knowledge required in terms of statistics or computer science that one should have before taking this course?
Nothing. We expect that most students will have no prior statistics or CS experience prior to taking Foundations of Data Science.
CS 194-15 Data Science is an upper-division CS course that assumes students know how to program and understand CS concepts. Foundations of Data Science is a first-year course that does not assume prior knowledge of programming and covers statistics fundamentals from the perspective of working computationally with data.
We expect the workload to be substantially less than CS 61A, but not light.
